Justin Jefferson is slowing down contract negotiations.
In the upcoming weeks, the Minnesota Vikings face a significant decision regarding Kirk Cousins, and wide receiver Justin Jefferson’s future could be influenced by the outcome. According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Jefferson is seeking clarity on the team’s quarterback situation for the next season before committing to a long-term contract with the Vikings.
“Vikings WR Justin Jefferson wants assurance of the team’s quarterback plans before agreeing to a long-term contract, per Tom Pelissero. Jefferson has consistently expressed his desire for Kirk Cousins to remain in Minnesota.”
Justin Jefferson has been vocal in his support of Kirk Cousins, but recent comments suggest he would be open to playing with another quarterback.
“It could be Kirk, it could not be Kirk,” Jefferson told NFL.com on February 8. “I have no idea, but it doesn’t matter who’s going to be throwing me that ball, you know I’m going to be that same type of player.”
Jefferson’s performance on the field speaks for itself. Despite missing seven games last season, he still managed to gain 1,074 receiving yards and score 5 TDs, earning Pro Bowl nods multiple times and first-team All-Pro honors in 2022.
The quarterback situation is crucial, as evidenced by the Vikings’ struggles after Cousins’ injury in Week 8. While backups like Josh Dobbs and Nick Mullens showed flashes, turnovers and inconsistency plagued the team. Rookie Jaren Hall also faced challenges in his two starts in 2023.

Despite Jefferson’s firm stance on wanting clarity regarding the quarterback situation, he is eager to secure his next contract. “I’m waiting,” Jefferson told The Rich Eisen Show. “Looking for the bag, just like you are. I’m waiting for the call to experience that with my family. It’s life-changing. I’m waiting for it.”
Spotrac projects Jefferson’s market value at $29.3 million annually over a new four-year deal. However, he is likely to reset the wide receiver market with a deal worth more than $30 million annually, potentially surpassing the $30 million Tyreek Hill received from the Miami Dolphins.
Cousins is also expected to command a significant contract, possibly in the range of $40-$45 million annually for two years. Despite his price tag, Cousins has proven his value, earning $185 million over six seasons in Minnesota, all fully guaranteed.
