The New England Patriots have identified a new successor to replace…
Reportedly, the New England Patriots are undergoing some alterations in their weight room setup. ESPN’s Mike Reiss indicates that the team’s strength and conditioning coach, Moses Cabrera,
is unlikely to continue with the team in the upcoming season. This change is part of a series of adjustments within the Patriots staff as the team transitions from Bill Belichick to Jerod Mayo.
In finding a replacement for Cabrera, the Patriots may not need to search far. Reiss suggests that there’s a possibility of promoting their current assistant strength and conditioning coach to the top position. Interestingly, the assistant in question is Deron Mayo, who happens to be the younger brother of Jerod Mayo.
To clarify, this decision isn’t coming as a surprise. Deron Mayo is actually the longest-serving Mayo brother on the Patriots coaching staff. He initially joined the team as the assistant strength and conditioning coach back in 2018, while Jerod Mayo took on the role of linebackers coach in 2019.
During his playing career, Deron Mayo served as a linebacker. He briefly played for the Denver Broncos before spending six seasons with the CFL’s Calgary Stampeders, during which he clinched a Grey Cup victory.
Cabrera’s departure marks another significant change in the Patriots’ coaching staff overhaul. The 45-year-old has been part of the Patriots since 2011, starting as the assistant strength and conditioning coach before assuming the head strength and conditioning role in 2016.
