In Arizona, the upcoming year holds significant promise for the Cardinals and their quarterback, Kyler Murray. Murray’s return to the team following ACL surgery saw him adapting quickly to a completely revamped offense under a new coaching staff, with a roster that lacked the same level of talent as before.

While Murray’s statistics may not have been impressive, considering the challenges he faced upon his return, achieving extravagant numbers was understandably difficult.

Arizona very much campaigned for Murray to be their franchise passer even before he touched the grass at State Farm Stadium, and when Murray played well enough to officially move forward with him at the helm, all bets of the former No. 1 pick moving elsewhere were settled.

Danny Heifetz from The Ringer discusses Murray’s commitment to remaining with the Arizona Cardinals.

Kyler Murray regained his form upon his return in the midst of last season following a torn ACL suffered in late 2022. He rejoined the Cardinals, who had undergone significant internal changes. Former head coach Kliff Kingsbury departed for Thailand, replaced by Jonathan Gannon, while long-serving GM Steve Keim was succeeded by Monti Ossenfort from the Patriots front office.

The franchise had received one of the lowest grades in the NFL Players Association survey last year, reflecting dissatisfaction among players with team facilities, coaching staff, and overall quality of life.

Cardinals players highlighted various issues, including the team’s policy of players covering their own dinner expenses, unlike other teams. Although the changes preceding last season didn’t immediately translate into numerous wins for the Cardinals, the atmosphere around the team notably improved, offering a fresh start for Murray and the organization after previous turbulence.

With the fourth overall pick in the upcoming draft, the Cardinals theoretically have the option to explore trading Murray for another quarterback, but there appears to be little interest within the organization in parting ways with him. Instead, investing in a top receiver like Marvin Harrison Jr. with their pick would solidify their commitment to Murray and their current trajectory.

Despite Arizona’s disappointing 4-13 record, there remains a sense of hope and optimism within the team, as emphasized by Kyler Murray himself.

Murray expressed his anticipation for the future, highlighting the excitement shared by his teammates. He voiced confidence in the direction of the team under the leadership of Monti and J.G., expressing contentment with their current position and eagerly anticipating the upcoming season.

Despite the negative coverage surrounding the Cardinals, there’s a noticeable shift in momentum that could work in their favor going forward.

With a full offseason to collaborate with offensive coordinator Drew Petzing, Kyler Murray stands to refine his skills under Petzing’s guidance. Additionally, the Cardinals possess ample cap space and numerous draft picks, providing opportunities to bolster their roster.

Jonathan Gannon, speaking at his end-of-season press conference, highlighted Murray’s significant leadership role within the team.

Gannon commended Murray’s growth and emphasized the close relationship between them, expressing confidence in Murray’s continued improvement. This endorsement from Gannon underscores the potential for positive developments within the Cardinals organization.

“We need to improve collectively, and Kyler will certainly be a part of that process. Whoever remains with us in 2024 will be well-versed in our expectations and our team ethos. Whether it’s Kyler or any other player, as long as they prioritize the team above themselves, they will have a place here. Monti, the coaching staff, and I have confidence in everyone’s roles moving forward.”

Despite earlier narratives questioning his maturity, Kyler Murray has proven himself capable. While he may not reach the level of Patrick Mahomes, and he’s yet to secure a playoff win for the Cardinals since joining the team, Murray’s upcoming massive contract extension suggests high expectations. As the extension takes effect this season, there’s anticipation that Murray will justify his hefty price tag sooner rather than later.

“We just need some continuity and experience together as a team. That’s what I’ve been emphasizing – it’s going to take time. I understand there was some skepticism after he performed well against Atlanta, but I truly believe there’s even more potential to unlock. Our team as a whole, our offense, we can reach another level. And with Kyler leading the charge at quarterback, I have full confidence that we can compete and win every single game.”
