Since trading Trent Brown to the Patriots in 2018, the 49ers have faced a persistent need for a reliable right tackle. It’s high time they consider bringing him back into the fold.
Brown, now a 30-year-old free agent, remains a quality player despite occasional absences due to injury. Consequently, the 49ers should explore signing him to a one-year contract as a temporary solution while nurturing a younger offensive tackle on the sidelines.
In retrospect, the decision to trade Brown seems regrettable. Although Kyle Shanahan, upon inheriting him, deemed Brown incompatible with the 49ers’ zone-blocking scheme, the subsequent trade to New England, which also involved a fourth-round pick, yielded disappointing results with the selection of safety Tarvarius Moore, who failed to meet expectations.
The 49ers’ attempt to replace Brown with Mick McGlinchey, a top-10 pick, also proved underwhelming. McGlinchey’s shortcomings, both mentally and physically, led to the team’s decision not to extend his contract.
In comparison, Brown has consistently outperformed both McGlinchey and the current right tackle, Colton McKivitz. While McKivitz possesses commendable mental and physical toughness, his limitations in athleticism undermine his effectiveness as an offensive tackle.
Brown, known for his exceptional athleticism despite occasional health and fitness concerns, could offer a valuable addition to the team, especially on a short-term deal. By securing Brown’s services, the 49ers would not solely rely on him, given the presence of McKivitz, and could also utilize their first-round pick to bolster the offensive line.
It’s imperative for the 49ers to address their offensive line deficiencies promptly. The time for action is long overdue.
