Russell Wilson is poised to be released by the Denver Broncos soon, with reports suggesting that the former Super Bowl champion is willing to sign for the NFL minimum salary to continue his career.
Wilson is expected to part ways with the Broncos after a disappointing stint that failed to match his success with the Seattle Seahawks. Despite signing a lucrative five-year, $242 million contract with the Broncos following a trade in 2022, Wilson struggled to meet expectations, leading to his benching for the final two games of the 2023 season in favor of backup Jarrett Stidham.
The Broncos reportedly asked Wilson to waive an injury guarantee clause in his contract before benching him, a request he declined. With his release expected around the start of the new league year on March 13, the Broncos will absorb the cost of his guaranteed $39 million salary for 2024, with an additional $37 million becoming fully guaranteed for 2025 if he remains on the roster after March 17.
Wilson’s Cherry Hills Village mansion, which he purchased with his wife Ciara, is now up for sale, signaling his imminent departure from Denver. Despite his recent struggles, Wilson remains a coveted veteran quarterback in the NFL, with many teams interested in his services, especially given his potential availability at a reduced salary.
ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler has indicated that Wilson has a market for his skills and would be open to signing for the minimum league salary, which is $1.2 million for a veteran with 10 or more years of experience, if he finds the right team.
