Reportedly, the New England Patriots have extended an offer to free agent safety

Eliot Wolf, the Patriots’ Director of Scouting, discusses the team’s interest in re-signing impending free agents Mike Onwenu and Kyle Dugger.

Kyle Dugger is a key free agent the New England Patriots are considering re-signing this offseason. The Patriots have reportedly initiated talks with Dugger and have extended an offer to the starting safety, according to sources cited by MassLive’s Mark Daniels and Karen Guregian.

Drafted in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Dugger has become a vital part of the Patriots’ defense, showcasing both his on-field prowess and leadership qualities. Last season, the 27-year-old safety recorded a career-high 71 solo tackles, along with 1.5 sacks, two interceptions, and seven passes defensed in 17 games.

While the Patriots could opt to franchise tag Dugger, which would cost them $17.1 million for the upcoming season, a long-term extension at a reasonable price appears to be a more favorable option for both parties.

Currently, the Patriots possess approximately $80 million in salary cap space, a figure that could rise above $90 million if they decide to part ways with veteran cornerback J.C. Jackson.

The legal tampering period for free agency begins on March 11, with teams permitted to sign free agents once the new league year kicks off on March 13.
