The New England Patriots are considering adding depth to their defensive line, with reports indicating their interest in veteran defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins during the NFL’s legal tampering period. Sources describe the Patriots’ interest as part of their thorough assessment of Rankins and the overall defensive tackle market.

Rankins, 29, is an eight-year veteran known for his ability against the run and as an interior pass rusher. Last season with the Houston Texans, he recorded six tackles, 37 tackles, 10 quarterback hits, and his first career defensive touchdown. Rankins was a first-round pick, drafted 12th overall by the New Orleans Saints, where he spent his first five seasons. His standout season came in 2019 when he achieved a career-high eight sacks, along with 40 tackles and 15 quarterback hits.

After his time with the Saints, Rankins spent two seasons in the AFC East with the New York Jets, coming off the bench in 2021 and starting every game played in 2022.

The Patriots are likely exploring options for defensive tackle depth after releasing veteran Lawrence Guy. Currently, the team’s defensive tackle roster includes Christian Barmore, Davon Godchaux, Daniel Ekuale, Jeremiah Pharms, and Trysten Hill.
