Breaking News:Jets have signed a 33-year-old offensive tackle to a contract that will keep…

Multiple reports indicate that the Jets are signing Tyron Smith, an eight-time Pro Bowl tackle, to a one-year contract.

There are many details to finalize regarding the contract.

When he’s on the field, the 33-year-old Smith continues to perform at a very high level. It’s likely that no other available tackle could raise the Jets’ offensive line’s potential as much.

The key phrase here is “when healthy.” Smith has missed at least three games in every season since 2016 and a total of 37 games over the last four seasons.

This signing is the epitome of high risk, high reward. The Jets are working with a very short-term outlook, with quarterback Aaron Rodgers in his 40s and pressure on the front office and coaching staff.

In the first five days of free agency, the Jets have added three new starters to an offensive line that needed them. On paper, the unit has the potential to be well above average if everything comes together.

Smith is arguably the biggest addition the Jets could have made this offseason.
