GM Unveils Unforeseen Advantage of Eagles’ Acquisition of Saquon Barkley

The Philadelphia Eagles are making a significant investment in Saquon Barkley, hoping he can improve their inconsistent running game and fill a crucial role for a team that struggled in the latter part of the 2023 season. Barkley, the second overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, joins the Eagles with impressive career stats, including a 4.3 yards per carry average, 47 total touchdowns, and 7,311 yards from scrimmage in 74 games with the New York Giants.

Former NFL general manager Mike Tannenbaum believes Barkley’s impact could extend beyond just the run game, benefiting quarterback Jalen Hurts as well. Hurts has been the most prolific running quarterback over the past three seasons, rushing the ball 491 times. Tannenbaum suggests that having an elite runner like Barkley in the backfield could reduce the pressure on Hurts to run, potentially keeping him healthier throughout the season.

Hurts is looking to bounce back in 2024 after a disappointing end to the 2023 season, where he struggled with turnovers and inconsistent play. Adding Barkley to the Eagles’ offense gives Hurts a reliable receiving option out of the backfield and provides the team with a true bellcow running back.

Pro Football Focus notes that Barkley’s ability to create yards after contact and his strong pass-blocking grade could benefit Hurts by giving him more time in the pocket and reducing the physical punishment he takes.

There were allegations of tampering surrounding Barkley’s signing with the Eagles, as it was suggested that general manager Howie Roseman had direct communication with Barkley before free agency, which would violate NFL rules. However, Barkley’s college coach, James Franklin, clarified that all conversations went through Barkley’s agent, and any assumptions of tampering were unfounded.
