Miami Marlins All-Star Jazz Chisholm Jr. criticized a former team captain, accusing them of fostering a “toxic” culture within the team.
Just before the start of the MLB regular season, the Miami Marlins are generating significant buzz, largely due to Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s recent controversial remarks about the “toxic” atmosphere within the team.
Chisholm, a 2022 All-Star, described the first three seasons of his Marlins career as the “worst three years probably of my life.” He expressed frustration at not being recognized as a team leader despite feeling like one, criticizing long-tenured players who were seen as team captains despite poor performance and behavior. Chisholm also mentioned an incident where a young prospect was criticized for emulating Juan Soto, indicating a lack of support for young talent within the clubhouse.
Chisholm’s comments were interpreted as directed at Miguel Rojas, a former Marlins player who joined the Los Angeles Dodgers last season after eight years with the Marlins. Rojas, known for his leadership, was defended by former Marlins team president David Samson, who praised Rojas as one of the best individuals he has encountered in his career.
Samson questioned Chisholm’s credibility, criticizing his lack of accomplishments in baseball and suggesting that his appearance in MLB The Show was only due to a favor from Derek Jeter, the former part-owner of the Marlins.
Samson also suggested that Chisholm benefited from the departures of veteran players like Jeff Conine and Mike Lowell, implying that they would have disciplined him if they were still on the team.
