Steelers draft a wide receiver in the first round this year?

Considering the positional value relative to the Pittsburgh Steelers’ roster, a strong argument can be made for selecting a wide receiver in the first round of the draft. Although the Steelers have a noticeable gap at center, it’s not considered a premier position like tackle.

Top centers like Zach Frazier or Jackson Powers-Johnson could likely be found in the second round, potentially even via trade-up if necessary.

While the Steelers have a reputation for drafting wide receivers successfully, they haven’t taken one in the first round since 2006 when they selected Santonio Holmes. Their track record, however, is not flawless, with players like Limas Sweed, James Washington, and Chase Claypool not earning second contracts.

Recent reports suggest the Steelers are exploring the wide receiver trade market, indicating a willingness to invest in the position. Despite Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith’s tendency to use 11 personnel less frequently than other teams, the Steelers currently rely heavily on George Pickens as their only dependable wide receiver. Other options like Calvin Austin III, Van Jefferson, Marquez Calloway, and Denzel Mims do not inspire much confidence. The uncertainty surrounding Pickens’ future adds to the urgency of addressing the wide receiver position.

While wide receiver is a pressing need, it’s not the only position deserving of a first-round pick. Arguments could also be made for selecting an offensive tackle, defensive lineman, or defensive back. Additionally, there’s the possibility of a quarterback falling to them in the draft, though it’s less likely.

  • The Steelers’ 2023 season ended in disappointment with a blowout playoff loss to the Buffalo Bills. The team faces a significant offseason with questions surrounding the quarterback position. The acquisition of Russell Wilson raises questions about the team’s Super Bowl potential and the future of the quarterback position in Pittsburgh. Despite a less substantial free agent list, the Steelers must address several key issues to chart a path forward for the upcoming season.
