Brandon Aiyuk, a player the Patriots may consider trading for, discusses negotiations regarding his contract.
Brandon Aiyuk, fully aware of his value to the San Francisco 49ers, is seeking a contract extension that reflects his contributions. If such an agreement cannot be reached with the team that drafted him in the first round in 2020, Aiyuk appears willing to explore other options.
During an appearance on the “Nightcap” podcast with Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson, Aiyuk, who is slated to play the 2024 season under his fifth-year option, discussed his contract situation. His nonverbal cues suggested a willingness to entertain offers from other teams as well.
“They’re trying to get work done,” Aiyuk said on the podcast. “I’m trying to get what I deserve. I feel like this season, playing football, I’ve discovered who I am as a person and a player, what I bring to the table, what I bring to the locker room, what I bring to the organization, and just the value I hold when I walk into that building.”
Despite being involved in trade rumors due to contract uncertainty, Aiyuk understands that he may need to seek opportunities elsewhere to secure the desired deal. While 49ers general manager John Lynch stated that Aiyuk is not available for trade, the reality is that San Francisco already has significant contracts on their books, with quarterback Brock Purdy nearing an extension himself.
“I’ve done it the right way. If they don’t see the worth in that…” Aiyuk paused, making a walking motion with his fingers. “That’s all it is. It ain’t nothing else besides that. I can’t get into it. We’ve got professionals working on both sides, so hopefully, we can come to a professional agreement and continue playing professional football.”
Aiyuk, 26, has recorded back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons, including a career-high 1,342 yards in 2023. He caught a career-best 78 passes the season before, with a combined 15 touchdowns over the previous two campaigns.
Any team in need of a receiver would be wise to inquire about an Aiyuk trade with the 49ers. The New England Patriots, in particular, have been mentioned as a potential destination for Aiyuk, given their need for a dynamic receiver. Reports suggest that the Patriots have explored the trade market for receivers, with Aiyuk and Tee Higgins being among the top targets.
