Breaking News: Atlanta Falcons Welcome 26-Year-Old Free Agent Pass Rusher…

For much of my life, this has been a recurring concern, particularly in recent times. Atlanta continues to be associated with promising prospects such as Dallas Turner, Jared Verse, and Laiatu Latu.

However, it appears that the Falcons are also keeping an eye on free agents, as evidenced by their hosting of James Smith-Williams over the weekend. Smith-Williams, who spent four seasons with the Commanders, is 26 years old and primarily serves as a rotational player.

While any addition to the team’s depth is appreciated, there’s a desire for acquisitions to bring more proven value.

In 2022, Smith-Williams recorded three sacks and 16 quarterback hits, marking career highs, while participating in 60% of Washington’s defensive snaps. While he contributes solidly, particularly in run defense, his overall impact falls short of transformative.

The Falcons seem to be addressing positional needs with experienced players, which is to be expected to some extent. An example of this approach is Antonio Hamilton’s acquisition to bolster the cornerback unit. However, there’s a hope for additions with higher potential upside.

James Smith-Williams fits into this category of player. The Falcons’ reluctance to invest in premier pass rushers is concerning. As the team currently relies on short-term deals, particularly with Kirk Cousins, their decision-making does not align with a clear “win-now” strategy.

Overall, there seems to be a reliance on optimism rather than concrete plans for the Falcons’ pass rush. With the hope for contributions from rookies like Turner, Verse, or Latu alongside the potential return of Calais Campbell, the team’s approach appears speculative rather than decisive.
