Michigan football:Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator departs Wolverines for Jim Harbaugh and an NFL opportunity
Former Michigan defensive coordinator Jesse Minter has accepted a coaching opportunity in the NFL with the Los Angeles Chargers, alongside one of his mentors. Minter, a finalist for the Broyles Award for his work with Michigan’s defense, leaves behind a successful tenure with the Wolverines, where he helped lead a top-10 defense in points allowed, total defense, and run defense for two consecutive seasons.
While Minter is excited about his new opportunity, he expressed gratitude for his time at Michigan, particularly working under head coach Jim Harbaugh. Minter played a crucial role in Michigan’s success, including their College Football Playoff National Championship win in 2023, where the defense dominated against Washington.
In joining the Chargers, Minter looks forward to contributing to the team’s success and working with Harbaugh to build a tough, physical team. Minter briefly served as the interim head coach for Michigan during a suspension for Harbaugh and was considered a potential candidate for NFL vacancies or even the head coaching position at Michigan before deciding to join Harbaugh in Los Angeles.
Minter’s coaching career includes stints at Vanderbilt, the Baltimore Ravens, Notre Dame, Cincinnati, Indiana State, and Georgia State, where he gained valuable experience before his successful tenure at Michigan.
