The Green Bay Packers opted for USC running back MarShawn Lloyd in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft not with the expectation that he could immediately replace Aaron Jones. Jones, a standout performer, amassed impressive rushing and receiving statistics during his tenure with the Packers, making his departure a significant loss for the team and its fans.
Lloyd, a rookie, cannot be expected to seamlessly fill Jones’ shoes, especially given Jones’ unique skill set and leadership qualities. However, Lloyd does share some similarities with Jones in terms of physical attributes and playing style. Both stand at 5-foot-9 and possess a similar build, showcasing their agility and effectiveness on the field.

Despite the Packers securing Josh Jacobs as their lead back for the upcoming season, and A.J. Dillon returning on a one-year contract, Lloyd’s role in the offense remains pivotal. While Jacobs and Dillon excel as power runners, Lloyd is tasked with assuming the dynamic “scatback” role previously filled by Jones. This role emphasizes agility, elusiveness, and versatility, attributes that can complement the Packers’ existing running backs.
Although Lloyd may not reach the milestone of rushing for 1,000 yards, his ability to serve as the change-of-pace option alongside Jacobs and Dillon can significantly enhance the Packers’ offensive versatility and competitiveness in the quest for a Super Bowl title in 2024.
