Lamar Jackson

Lamar Jackson’s supporters often argue that his exceptional reliance within the team elevates him to the top tier of quarterback rankings. While Patrick Mahomes benefits from Andy Reid’s stellar playbook and play-calling, and many other quarterbacks enjoy better offensive weapons, Jackson has consistently been the linchpin of his team’s offense. Unlike any other quarterback in the NFL, Jackson is tasked with shouldering a disproportionate load week after week, and he consistently delivers.

Jackson’s athleticism, remarkable arm talent, and unique running ability have made him the focal point of the Ravens’ offense since his first year starting in 2019. The team’s run game is intricately woven around his skills, and he often finds himself targeting tight ends rather than dominant outside wide receivers.

Hopes for change emerged when the Ravens appointed Todd Monken as their new offensive coordinator and drafted wide receiver Zay Flowers while signing Odell Beckham Jr. Yet, despite some noticeable shifts in the team’s offensive dynamics under Monken’s guidance, challenges persisted. In an interview with the podcast “Coaches and the Mouth” released on May 3, Monken acknowledged the team’s overreliance on Jackson, particularly in the red zone, early in the season.

Monken revealed that head coach John Harbaugh expressed dissatisfaction with this reliance on Jackson, emphasizing the need for a more diversified offensive approach. Following this discussion, the coaching staff resolved to address the issue by exploring creative strategies to reduce dependence on Jackson, resulting in a significant improvement in the team’s red zone efficiency.

Looking ahead to the 2024 season, Ravens fans can anticipate further evolution in the team’s offensive strategy. With Monken and Jackson entering their second year of collaboration, and promising young talents like Flowers and Rashod Bateman expected to step up, coupled with the addition of running back Derrick Henry, the Ravens aim to expand their offensive repertoire and reduce their dependence on Jackson as the sole driving force behind their success.
