Matt Eberflus Delivers Concise Update on Caleb Williams

The Chicago Bears are making it clear: rookie Caleb Williams is their starting quarterback for the upcoming 2024 season.

During a press conference on the first day of rookie minicamp, Bears head coach Matt Eberflus addressed reporters, focusing extensively on Williams and the team’s preparations for his NFL debut.

When asked if there had been discussions with Williams about competing for the starting job, Eberflus responded unequivocally, stating, “No conversation, he’s the starter.”

While Eberflus’ statement might seem straightforward, it marks a departure from the Bears’ past approach of gradually integrating rookie quarterbacks into the lineup. In previous seasons, the team opted to start veteran quarterbacks over their top draft picks at the beginning of the season. However, the Bears are taking a different approach this time, designating Williams as their starter from the outset.

The team’s confidence in Williams is evident in their decision not to sign a veteran backup quarterback to challenge him. Instead, they have chosen to rely on Tyson Bagent, an undrafted rookie from the 2023 season, as their backup. Additionally, they have signed Brett Rypien and rookie Austin Reed to compete for the third-string position.

Describing Williams as “an enhancer,” Eberflus emphasized the rookie quarterback’s positive impact on the team. Williams’ familiarity with the Bears’ offense was evident during his first practice, where he showcased his arm strength and precision. He had been studying the playbook for weeks before being officially drafted, and the team had introduced him to their offensive system during pre-draft visits.

Williams will also benefit from the guidance of experienced coaches, including offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, quarterbacks coach Kerry Joseph, and assistant quarterback coach Ryan Griffin. Both Joseph and Griffin bring extensive professional quarterback experience, which will be invaluable as Williams develops in his new role.

Overall, the Bears are confident in Williams’ abilities and are fully committed to him as their starting quarterback for the upcoming season.
