Buffalo Bills: Incredible Reason Behind Marquez Valdes-Scantling’s Decision to Sign as a Free Agent Uncovered
The Buffalo Bills are overhauling their wide receiver lineup this season. Earlier in the offseason, they traded Stefon Diggs, a Pro Bowler in each of his four seasons with the team, to the Houston Texans. Gabe Davis was not re-signed and subsequently joined the Jacksonville Jaguars.
To fill these gaps, Buffalo signed Curtis Samuel and Mack Hollins in free agency. They also selected highly regarded wide receiver Keon Coleman in the 2024 NFL Draft.
The Buffalo Bills have signed free agent wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling.
Earlier this week, it was reported that the Bills were hosting former Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling. Following a brief visit, MVS signed a one-year deal worth $4.5 million. Valdes-Scantling is a two-time Super Bowl champion, having won with the Chiefs in each of the past two seasons. In their most recent Super Bowl victory over the San Francisco 49ers, he recorded three catches for 20 yards and a touchdown.
In the 2022 AFC Championship Game, MVS had six receptions for 116 yards and a touchdown. Two years prior, in the NFC Championship where the Packers lost to Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he made four catches for 115 yards and a touchdown.
Marquez Valdes-Scantling signed with the Buffalo Bills due to the presence of quarterback Josh Allen.
Earlier this afternoon, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler posted on X (formerly Twitter) that Marquez Valdes-Scantling chose to sign with the Buffalo Bills, despite visiting with other teams, because of quarterback Josh Allen.
As seen above, Allen invited Marquez Valdes-Scantling to his house during his free agent visit. MVS enjoyed how well he got along with the Pro Bowl quarterback and decided he didn’t want to visit any more teams.
Few wide receivers can claim to have been targets for multiple Pro Bowl quarterbacks. MVS was drafted in the fifth round by the Packers in 2018 and immediately began catching passes from future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers. After leaving Green Bay as a free agent, he signed with the Chiefs and caught passes from another future Hall of Famer, Patrick Mahomes.
Now, he will be catching passes from Allen, whom many consider one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.
