The Carolina Panthers are facing quarterback challenges, a surprising development given they drafted Bryce Young just a year ago. However, the team is evaluating their options for the third-string quarterback position, suggesting that Young is not the issue.
Head coach Dave Canales currently has Young as the sophomore QB with Andy Dalton backing him up in the quarterback room.
In a recent press conference, Canales expressed interest in adding a third quarterback to the roster. Currently, Jack Plummer, an undrafted free agent from the University of Louisville, holds the third-string spot.
“We always look to add players, especially those familiar with our system. I’m looking for someone who can add value to the quarterback room, particularly for Bryce,” Canales said.
Canales has been impressed with what he’s seen from Plummer despite the rookie’s lack of experience.
“The good part about Jack is I’ve seen accuracy and his ability to manage the plays at the line. I’m excited about his potential,” Canales added. “But we’re still keeping our options open and monitoring the market for any potential additions.”
Canales is open to bringing in a veteran quarterback to strengthen the team’s quarterback depth. Some notable names on the free-agent market include Ryan Tannehill, Brian Hoyer, and Trevor Siemian. Despite having Bryce Young, who proved durable in his rookie year, and Andy Dalton as backup, Canales believes in keeping the roster competitive and prepared.
The Carolina Panthers had a disappointing season last year, finishing with a 2-15 record. Canales faces the task of revitalizing the team culture and rebuilding the locker room mentality. He remains optimistic about the Panthers making a resurgence in the upcoming season.
As for Bryce Young, his rookie year was far from ideal. He threw for 2,877 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, with a disappointing QBR of 33.4, ranking 29th in the league. This performance was surprising given he was the first pick in the 2022-23 draft class. However, Young faced challenges, including an inconsistent offensive line and a tough rookie situation.
