Discover Why Anthony Richardson Has Been Working Hard This Offseason

INDIANAPOLIS – Anthony Richardson is gearing up to elevate his game.

With the arrival of Colts OTAs this week, Richardson is expected to participate in his first 11-on-11 drills since his rookie season ended on October 8, 2024, due to season-ending right shoulder surgery.

Private quarterbacks coach Will Hewlett, who has worked with Richardson during multiple offseasons, has a good sense of what to expect from Richardson’s return.

“Despite the limited playtime, Richardson gained enough experience to build significant confidence,” Hewlett says. “He’s coming back with a certain aura, having proven his abilities at a high level. He’s excited about the progress he’s made.”

Even with the injury setback, Hewlett believes Richardson has been feeling positive about his trajectory. “There are always question marks after surgery, but we’re many steps ahead of where we were last year,” he notes.

Initially, Hewlett’s work with Richardson focused on improving his velocity control and the timing of his throws. Hewlett is pleased with the progress, particularly in Richardson’s footwork and lower body mechanics.

“There was a narrative that Richardson couldn’t throw accurately coming out of Florida,” Hewlett says. “He worked hard to perfect his craft, tightening up his technique, and made massive strides from last offseason.”

Richardson aims to refine his “Brock Purdy throws over the middle,” a type of pass he successfully executed in last year’s game against the Rams, connecting with Josh Downs.

Hewlett, who runs the QB Collective in Florida, doesn’t agree with the perception of Richardson as a runner first and thrower second. “I don’t think Anthony should be categorized as a run-first quarterback,” Hewlett asserts. “He’s exceptional in the pocket and has an incredible ability to navigate pressure.”

Richardson’s athleticism, combined with his improved throwing mechanics, makes him a unique dual-threat quarterback. Colts GM Chris Ballard is confident in Richardson’s potential as a passer, based on his rookie performance.

With OTAs underway, the Colts and those closest to Richardson are eager to see his post-surgery performance and further progress.
