Indiana Football: The Most Heartbreaking Transfer Exits

The transfer portal often brings disappointment to football fans as it’s difficult when players leave and find success elsewhere. In the current market, retaining players through the transfer portal is a significant challenge, especially when coaches depart. Some departures, however, are more painful than others. Here’s a list of transfers that have particularly impacted Indiana football fans.

Notably, there are more quarterbacks on this list than any other position, for obvious reasons. Many of these transfers are also recent, and while it remains to be seen how these players will affect Indiana University or benefit their new teams, a lack of depth can be detrimental to any program.

Honorable Mentions: Kane Womack and Kalen DeBoer
Though not players, the departures of Womack and DeBoer were significant blows to Indiana football. Sustaining a successful football program has been elusive in Bloomington, but Tom Allen appeared to be steering the team in the right direction. However, the offense struggled after Kalen DeBoer left to become head coach at Fresno State.

While the defense remained strong for a time, it faced challenges after defensive coordinator Kane Womack took over as head coach at South Alabama. Managing coaching turnover is a key challenge for any head coach, and Allen struggled with this, making the losses of DeBoer and Womack particularly impactful.
