Sad Update: Rome Odunze’s Injury Still Lingering at Bears OTAs

The Chicago Bears opened Halas Hall on Thursday for the team’s beat reporters to cover practice.

The Bears are currently in the OTA phase of their offseason, working on a new offense under offensive coordinator Shane Waldron and rookie quarterback Caleb Williams. A key player for the Bears’ offense is expected to be rookie wide receiver Rome Odunze, who was picked 9th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.

There was some concern during the rookie mini-camp earlier this month when Odunze didn’t practice after the first day due to hamstring tightness. Indicating that the injury might still be an issue, Odunze wasn’t seen on the practice field on Thursday.

Chicago Bears fans are feeling anxious about Odunze not practicing. Given the team’s history of drafting wide receivers early only to face immediate injury issues, Odunze’s absence is likely reminding fans of Kevin White’s rookie season.

Rome Odunze #15 of the Chicago Bears

White, drafted by the Bears in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft, missed his entire rookie season due to a leg injury and subsequent surgery. Over three seasons with the Bears, White only played in 14 games.

Despite the panic, it’s worth noting that the Bears might just be cautious with Odunze. His work ethic at the University of Washington was highly praised, and the Bears might be easing him into action before Training Camp in July.

For what it’s worth, Matt Eberflus expressed optimism that Odunze would be practicing next week.

Overall, reports from Thursday’s practice indicate that the defense is ahead of the offense, which is typical at this stage. While there are some offensive struggles, it’s expected that there will be daily improvements.
