$54 Million Pass Rusher Shares Update on New Contract and Potential Trade

New England Patriots edge defender Matthew Judon is seeking a new contract and might consider a trade. The former fifth-round pick, now a consistent Pro Bowler, is entering the final season of a four-year deal he signed in 2021 and wants more financial security. Judon skipped voluntary workouts and avoided contract discussions during his youth football camp, indicating his desire for a new deal.

Despite missing voluntary sessions, Judon stated in an interview with Karen Guregian of MassLive that he will not hold out during the mandatory portion of the offseason, saying he “ain’t giving no money away” and will attend mandatory minicamps. It remains unclear if Judon will continue with the Patriots or if a trade will send him elsewhere.

From a financial perspective, the Patriots have the means to pay Judon, as they currently have $52.2 million in cap space, the most in the league. They could offer Judon a raise and additional contract years without long-term financial consequences.

The question is whether the Patriots want to extend Judon’s contract. With the team transitioning into a new era post-Brady, and with Judon being 32 years old, the Patriots might opt to trade him for a draft pick, given that they are not immediate Super Bowl contenders.

Possible Trade Destinations*Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs, aiming for their third Super Bowl in three seasons, could benefit from adding Judon alongside Chris Jones and George Karlaftis. While the Chiefs have high hopes for former first-round pick Felix Anudike-Uzomah, his poor rookie season might push the team to trade for the proven talent in Judon.

Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons need more experience on their defensive line despite drafting several players in 2024. With Kirk Cousins at quarterback, the team is set to compete, but they need a stronger pass rush to succeed in the playoffs. Judon could be the key to winning the NFC South.

Detroit Lions
The Lions, close to a Super Bowl appearance last year, have strong odds for 2024. With a solid offense and improved secondary, their main need is at edge defender. Pairing Judon with Aidan Hutchinson and using Marcus Davenport as depth could create a top-tier defensive trio.

Baltimore Ravens
Having lost several key players, including Jadeveon Clowney, the Ravens need stability at edge defender. Trading for Judon, who started his career in Baltimore, would provide that stability and bolster their defensive line.

Carolina Panthers
While not Super Bowl contenders in 2024, the Panthers could use veteran talent like Judon. With Jadeveon Clowney and D.J. Wonnum filling in for Brian Burns, adding Judon would strengthen their defense and help them win more games with a strong defensive lineup.
