Kwity Paye Disheartened by Lack of Contract Talks with Colts.
Despite a standout 2023 season, Kwity Paye is unlikely to receive an extension offer this offseason. ESPN’s Stephen Holder reports that the Colts are “not believed” to have engaged in extension talks with Paye’s representatives. Holder suggests that the Colts plan to use the 2024 season to determine if Paye is worth an extension.
Although Paye is eligible for an extension, the Colts aren’t in a rush. They have already exercised his fifth-year option, securing him through the 2025 season. As it stands, the 25-year-old is set to become a free agent in the 2026 offseason.
Selected 21st overall in the 2021 draft, Paye has been a consistent contributor to Indianapolis’ defense. He earned All-Rookie team honors with four sacks in 2021, and despite playing only 12 games in his second year, he added six more sacks.
Paye elevated his performance in 2023, achieving career highs in tackles (52), sacks (8.5), and forced fumbles (two). Pro Football Focus ranked him 36th among 112 qualifying edge defenders, highlighting his strong run defense.
Having played about 66 percent of the defensive snaps over his first three seasons, the Colts hope Paye can take on an even larger role before they consider a lucrative extension. If he doesn’t maintain his performance, the Colts have prepared for the future by drafting UCLA edge rusher Laiatu Latu with the 15th overall pick this year.
