Lions ink second-round cornerback to rookie deal.
Friday marked the end of Week 2 of OTAs for the Detroit Lions, who also completed an important task by signing second-round draft pick cornerback Ennis Rakestraw to his rookie contract.
Rakestraw shared the news on Twitter, announcing that he had signed the deal.
Rakestraw, who generated considerable pre-draft buzz tied to the Lions, fell to them in the second round at pick No. 61. While his precise role in the secondary is yet to be determined, he has already showcased versatility by dabbling in the slot.
Renowned NFL analyst Greg Cosell highlighted Rakestraw’s potential fit in the slot, attributing it to his well-rounded skills and competitive mindset. “Some teams may see him more as a slot corner given his lack of desired size for the outside and his short area burst and quickness and willingness and toughness playing the run and his overall high-level competitiveness,” Cosell noted. Rakestraw boasts experience playing both outside and slot corner positions, with his athleticism and competitive traits indicating potential success in the slot at the professional level.
Despite missing the end of his final season at Missouri due to a core muscle injury, Rakestraw made an impact, tallying 35 tackles and four pass breakups over nine games. He earned an impressive 80.7 overall Pro Football Focus grade, ranking in the top 12 for run defense among cornerbacks (89.0).
Over the past two seasons, Rakestraw’s Pro Football Focus coverage grade (85.8) ranked eighth among SEC cornerbacks, showcasing his proficiency in coverage.
The terms of Rakestraw’s contract have not been disclosed, but it’s expected to be a four-year deal. Based on projections, it’s estimated to be around $6,484,746, including a signing bonus of $1,356,180. The contract is likely to include guaranteed money, with the first two years’ base salaries fully guaranteed, totaling approximately $3.2 million.
The Lions have already signed their four Day 3 draft picks earlier this month, leaving first-round pick Terrion Arnold as the only unsigned player from this year’s draft class. However, the Lions have historically taken their time signing high draft picks, as illustrated by Jahmyr Gibbs not signing until July 17 last year, according to Mike Payton of AtoZ Sports.
