Rams Linked to 12-Sack Free Agent
June has arrived, and the free agent market is likely to heat up for players like Yannick Ngakoue. Teams that utilized a post-June 1st designation will soon gain extra cap space, often leading to a surge in late-season signings. Ngakoue, a notable pass rusher still available, could attract attention if he’s fully recovered from his broken ankle. Last season, he played in 13 games for the Chicago Bears, recording four sacks, 22 tackles, six tackles for loss, and seven quarterback hits.
Although Ngakoue may not be the dominant player he once was, he can still contribute in specific roles. Head coach Matt Eberflus praised him as a “great teammate” for younger players and a positive influence in the locker room. Considering these factors, Bleacher Report suggests that the Los Angeles Rams pursue Ngakoue.
Pairing Verse and Fiske with Turner and Byron Young could enhance the Rams’ pass rush, which generated 41 sacks last season. Adding Ngakoue as a situational player, provided he has fully recovered from his injury, could be beneficial.
Rams Linked To Free Agent Yannick Ngakoue
Yannick Ngakoue may not be the most versatile player, but he remains an effective situational pass rusher. Entering his age-29 season, the former “Sacksonville” defense member fits well with the Los Angeles Rams. The Rams ended the 2023 season with 41 sacks, the second-fewest in the league, a figure that is expected to decline further with Aaron Donald’s retirement.
Even though Ngakoue cannot replace Donald’s impact, the Rams need a robust rotation of edge defenders to compensate for his absence. While many teams will likely be interested in Ngakoue due to his pass-rushing skills, he is just a year removed from a 9.5-sack season. Assuming he’s healthy, these five teams might also consider signing him.
Other Potential Teams
Baltimore Ravens: The Ravens could benefit from adding Ngakoue as depth behind Odafe Oweh, providing insurance if Oweh doesn’t meet expectations.
Atlanta Falcons. With strong offensive pieces, the Falcons need defensive fortification. Ngakoue could offer immediate contributions, positioning Atlanta as NFC South favorites if the defense holds up.
Carolina Panthers:After trading Brian Burns, the Panthers need edge rushers. Although Jadeveon Clowney and D.J. Wonnum have been added, Ngakoue would further strengthen their pass rush.
New Orleans Saints: Despite having Chase Young and Cameron Jordan, the Saints could use Ngakoue as insurance given Young’s inconsistency and Jordan’s age.
Detroit Lions. As potential Super Bowl contenders, the Lions could use Ngakoue to complement Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport, focusing solely on pass-rushing duties.
