Trevor Lawrence Poised to Become NFL’s Second-Highest-Paid Player with Impending Contract Extension

In today’s NFL landscape, holding the title of the highest-paid player in football doesn’t quite carry the same weight it once did. Currently, Joe Burrow holds that distinction, but it’s only a matter of time before another quarterback surpasses him. The spotlight may soon shift to Trevor Lawrence.

As the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Lawrence finds himself with just two years left on his contract. If the Jacksonville Jaguars don’t secure a contract extension, their starting quarterback will hit free agency in 2026. However, the Jaguars are determined to retain their 24-year-old Pro Bowl QB.

Reports suggest that the Jaguars are actively working on extending Lawrence’s contract, with ESPN’s Michael DiRocco indicating that Lawrence could soon become the second-highest-paid player in the NFL. Negotiations between Lawrence and the Jaguars have been ongoing for several months, with speculation pointing towards a contract exceeding $50 million per season.

According to one NFL front office executive, Lawrence’s extension is expected to surpass Jared Goff’s $53 million but fall short of Joe Burrow’s $55 million average annual salary. The structure of the deal is anticipated to resemble Goff’s contract, which includes a four-year extension beginning after the 2024 season and a $78 million signing bonus, spread over five seasons.

While Lawrence may soon hold the title of the NFL’s second-highest-paid player, it’s inevitable that others, like Tua Tagovailoa and Dak Prescott, will sign even more lucrative contracts in the near future.
