Colts’ Rookie Surprise Ready to Excel in 2024 NFL Season
After concluding their 2024 NFL Draft in late April, the Indianapolis Colts secured a total of nine picks. Some of these selections immediately stood out for their potential, like Laiatu Latu, the edge rusher taken 15th overall in the first round, and wide receiver Adonai Mitchell, who was chosen 52nd overall in the second round. However, once you move past these top picks, the information tends to thin out.
One player who wasn’t widely known was Anthony Gould, the Colts’ first of two fifth-round picks, who played wide receiver for Oregon State.
The Colts’ wide receiver group is intriguing, particularly with the signing of Michael Pittman Jr. to a multi-year deal, making him the team’s WR1 for 2024. Following him are last year’s third-round pick Josh Downs and Alec Pierce, both of whom showed promise in the previous season.
Adonai Mitchell is expected to boost the team’s aerial production, but Gould could also play a role.
In 2023, he had 44 receptions for 718 yards and two touchdowns, ranking sixth in the Pac-12 with an average of 16.3 yards per reception, according to Sports-Reference. Gould was also an accomplished returner in college, scoring twice on punt returns and averaging 18.3 yards per return in 2022, the third best in FBS.
“Obviously, he’s got the return ability, but he can do some things at wideout as well,” Colts general manager Chris Ballard told Yahoo Sports. “To add that speed – he’s a 4.33 guy, another speed guy. We know Anthony [Richardson] can throw it, so it’s good to get both of those guys.”
With Anthony Richardson returning from injury, Steichen’s main goal is to build the offense around him.
