Colts’ 2023 Draft Selection Faces Another Serious Injury.
The Indianapolis Colts are facing a significant need for talent in their secondary. While their defensive starters – JuJu Brents, Kenny Moore II, Julian Blackmon, and Nick Cross – are dependable, the team lacks depth across all positions. This deficiency was highlighted by recent news regarding one of the Colts’ 2023 draft picks suffering a second major injury early in his career.
According to Ari Meirov, safety Daniel Scott sustained a ruptured Achilles during a practice session last week, ruling him out for the entire 2024 NFL season. This injury is a devastating blow for Scott, who had previously torn his ACL during OTAs as a fifth-round rookie in 2023. Recovering from consecutive major injuries so early in his career will undoubtedly be a challenging task for him.
Scott, a product of Cal, was expected to play a depth role on defense and contribute regularly on special teams. However, he will now have to wait until his third year as a pro to see his first NFL snap.
In Scott’s absence, the Colts will rely on existing safeties Rodney Thomas II, Trevor Denbow, and Marcel Dabo to step up. However, there’s a possibility that Indianapolis may pursue a veteran safety or cornerback before training camp to bolster their depth with experienced players. Some notable free agent options include Justin Simmons, Quandre Diggs, and Eddie Jackson.
