The Miami Dolphins orchestrated one of the most significant trades in recent history by acquiring superstar wide receiver Tyreek Hill. In 2022, they traded five draft picks to the Chiefs to secure the elite pass catcher.
Since joining the Dolphins, Hill has amassed at least 1,700 yards in each of his first two seasons. He recorded 1,710 yards and seven touchdowns in 2022, and 1,799 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2023. His 2023 performance led the league in both receiving yards and touchdowns among wide receivers.
Hill has been a standout since entering the NFL, and his productivity has not diminished with the Dolphins. Initially, there were concerns that Hill might decline without quarterback Patrick Mahomes, but his chemistry with Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been impressive.
Upon acquiring Hill, the Dolphins made him the highest-paid receiver at that time, signing him to a four-year, $120 million deal. However, this record has since been surpassed by three other receivers who secured record extensions this offseason.

The Eagles and A.J. Brown agreed to a three-year, $96 million extension in April, averaging $32 million per season. The Lions extended Amon-Ra St. Brown with a four-year, $120.01 million deal, averaging $30.02 million per year. Most recently, the Vikings and Justin Jefferson agreed to a record-breaking four-year, $140 million extension, averaging $35 million annually, making him the highest-paid non-quarterback ever.
Given these recent contracts, Hill’s annual salary is poised to increase, reflecting his consistent high performance. It is expected that Hill will rank among the top three receivers in terms of production again in 2024.
Longtime NFL analyst Adam Schefter suggests that the Dolphins may consider adjusting Hill’s contract.
During an appearance on the Pat McAfee show, Schefter discussed Jefferson’s record extension and its implications for Hill. McAfee noted that Hill was on pace to reach 2,000 receiving yards in 2023 and nearly achieved that milestone.
Schefter stated, “I think the Dolphins are going to figure out how to adjust Tyreek Hill’s deal. I don’t think they are going to tear up the deal and give him a whole new contract. Instead, I believe the deal will be adjusted to provide Hill with additional benefits, concessions, salaries, and money to align his compensation with his status as a top receiver.”
Hill’s outstanding performance over the past two seasons, where he ranked in the top two for receiving yards, signals to the Dolphins that he should be compensated as a top receiver once again. The organization also extended Jaylen Waddle, making him the fifth highest-paid wide receiver at $28.25 million per year.
Hill is arguably one of the best, if not the best, wide receivers in the league, and the Dolphins may need to further invest in their most crucial offensive weapon.
