Chiefs and Saints Among 5 Teams Pursuing $30 Million Free Agent.

The 2023 season was a challenging one for free agent wide receiver Russell Gage. After a severe concussion in the 2022 Wild Card Round, Gage aimed to make a comeback with the post-Brady Buccaneers. Unfortunately, a torn patellar tendon ended his season before it began. Consequently, the financially strained Buccaneers released him, using the savings to re-sign Mike Evans, Baker Mayfield, and Antoine Winfield.

Due to his recent injuries, Russell Gage has not attracted much attention in the free agent market. While he’s not a Hall of Fame candidate, he can still be a valuable second or third option in an offense. In his last healthy season, he recorded 51 receptions for 426 yards and five touchdowns behind Evans and Chris Godwin. His best season was in 2020, with 72 receptions for 786 yards and four touchdowns. Though those peak days might be past, Gage still has the ability to compete for a roster spot.

Chiefs and Saints Leading Contenders for Russell Gage**
Among the interested teams, the Kansas City Chiefs and New Orleans Saints seem the most logical fits for Gage. Kansas City currently has three reliable receivers in Marquise Brown, Xavier Worthy, and Rashee Rice. However, with Rice facing a suspension, they lack a dependable backup for his role. Both Rice and Gage are possession receivers, and while Rice is superior at this stage, Gage could fill in adequately. If Michael Thomas proves too costly, Kansas City might turn to Gage.

Similarly, the Saints could benefit from adding Gage. With one of the weakest offensive lines, quarterback Derek Carr will need quick-release options to endure the season. Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed offer different strengths, but the team needs a reliable short-range target. Gage fits this role well and would be a cost-effective option for the cash-strapped Saints.

Other Potential Teams
Baltimore Ravens**: Mark Andrews and Zay Flowers are primary targets, with faith in Rashod Bateman. However, Gage could provide a safety net if Bateman underperforms, running short and intermediate routes for Lamar Jackson.

Los Angeles Chargers**: Justin Herbert needs reliable receivers. Even if Ladd McConkey excels, the Chargers could use another dependable option like Gage for critical 3rd and 4 plays.

Carolina Panthers**: With first-round pick Xavier Legette needing time to adjust to the NFL, Gage could offer a low-risk, high-reward option. He could play as a slot receiver, complementing Diontae Johnson and Adam Thielen on the outside.
