Raiders to Let $35 Million in Cap Space Sit Idle Instead of Strengthen Roster This Summer?

Despite having nearly $35 million in salary cap space, a new report suggests the Las Vegas Raiders won’t be making any significant free-agent additions this summer.

There is considerable optimism surrounding the Raiders ahead of the 2024 NFL season. While their 8-9 finish last year wasn’t remarkable, the team made a notable turnaround in the second half under new head coach Antonio Pierce. After struggling under former coach Josh McDaniels, there’s a belief that the team can reach its potential this season.

Although the roster has the potential to compete with the Kansas City Chiefs for the AFC West title, additional pieces could strengthen their chances in a competitive division. Fortunately, the team has $34.9 million in cap space following some offseason moves. However, it appears that none of this money will be used for immediate roster improvements.

“Despite having that additional room, the Raiders don’t plan on using it to make a major veteran acquisition,” sources told The Athletic on Friday. “They plan to preserve that money for in-season roster flexibility, looming extensions for players already on the roster, and rollover cap space for 2025. This approach is consistent with how the Raiders handled the earlier stages of free agency.”

In March, the Raiders signed defensive tackle Christian Wilkins to a four-year, $110 million contract and quarterback Gardner Minshew to a two-year, $25 million deal. However, their other signings were more about filling complementary roles, with the remaining needs addressed in April’s NFL Draft.

Notable free agents like Jamal Adams, Adoree’ Jackson, and Xavien Howard are still available. While this news may disappoint Raiders fans, the strategy makes sense for new general manager Tom Telesco. This approach allows flexibility for a significant move before the season starts or near the trade deadline.
