Five NFL Backup QBs Ready for Significant Playing Time in 2024

An unprecedented number of backup quarterbacks saw substantial playing time in the NFL in 2023. Injuries to starters like Aaron Rodgers, Joe Burrow, Kirk Cousins, Deshaun Watson, and Anthony Richardson gave both journeymen and rising players increased opportunities.

Here are five backup QBs who might see their playing time increase this season:

Drew Lock, New York Giants
Daniel Jones is expected to be the Giants’ starter if healthy. However, concerns about his durability, following an ACL tear and a neck injury, suggest Drew Lock might step in. Jones has missed 23 games over five seasons, and reports indicate the Giants are impressed with Lock, who could contend for the starting job even if Jones remains healthy.

Jameis Winston, Cleveland Browns
The Watson era in Cleveland has been tumultuous, with 12 games, 2,217 yards, 14 touchdowns, nine interceptions, two injuries, and one suspension over two years. If Watson continues to struggle with injuries, Winston, who joined Cleveland for the opportunity, could see significant playing time. With 80 games of starting experience, Winston could be a viable option if Watson falters.

Joe Flacco, Indianapolis Colts
Anthony Richardson’s surgery on his throwing shoulder and his tendency to take unnecessary hits make Joe Flacco a crucial backup for the Colts. Richardson’s season ended early last year due to injury, and if he doesn’t change his playing style, Flacco might start a substantial number of games in 2024. Flacco showed his capabilities last season with the Browns and could perform well with the Colts’ playmakers.

Justin Fields, Pittsburgh Steelers
Despite the Steelers’ confidence in Russell Wilson, doubts persist about his ability to hold off Justin Fields. Wilson’s decision-making has declined, and his passing yards per game have dropped. Fields, who is younger, more athletic, and has a stronger arm, could replace Wilson if he struggles. Fields is eager to prove himself after leaving Chicago and might start by Week 5.

Sam Howell, Seattle Seahawks
Geno Smith’s career revival in 2022 faded last season. The Seahawks acquired Sam Howell, who had a solid 2023 season with Washington despite a poor offensive line and numerous drops by his receivers. If Howell impresses in training camp and preseason, he could overtake Smith as the starting quarterback heading into Week 1.
