Chargers Bolster Defense with Signing of Retired Ravens Star Tony Jefferson

The LA Chargers have developed a pattern of recruiting former Baltimore Ravens since hiring Joe Hortiz as the general manager. Hortiz, with his background in the Ravens front office, has consistently turned to familiar coaches and players as the team begins a new chapter under Jim Harbaugh.

Despite concluding OTAs and mandatory minicamp, the Bolts continue to add former Ravens to their roster. NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports that the Chargers have signed veteran safety Tony Jefferson to a one-year deal. Jefferson, who retired after the 2022 season, impressed the Chargers during a recent workout and will now compete for a spot in training camp.

The Chargers’ signing of Jefferson addresses a critical need at safety, which remained unaddressed even after re-signing Alohi Gilman. Although the starting duo of Gilman and Derwin James is strong, the depth behind them is uncertain and could be problematic if injuries occur.

Injuries are common in the NFL, and if either starting safety were to get hurt, the Chargers would have to rely on J.T. Woods, who has yet to prove himself at the NFL level. Additionally, with James frequently shifting positions within the defense, the third safety could see significant playing time.

Jefferson brings veteran experience and familiarity with Jesse Minter’s defensive scheme. Having served as a scout for the Ravens last season, he remains well-connected to the game and to Hortiz.

While it’s uncertain if Jefferson will perform at a high level after a year off, his potential upside makes this a worthwhile gamble for the Chargers. If Jefferson succeeds, it will be seen as a shrewd move by Hortiz and his team. If not, the team faces minimal risk in giving him a chance.
