Lions Outbid Cardinals in 1st-Round Trade-Up
It’s the season for NFL teams to release behind-the-scenes videos from the 2024 NFL Draft. The Arizona Cardinals are the latest to share footage from their war room, which indirectly involves the Detroit Lions.
In the video, the Cardinals, who had the 27th overall pick—two spots ahead of the Lions’ 29th pick—were negotiating a trade-up with the Dallas Cowboys for the 24th pick. Cardinals GM Monti Ossenfort proposed trading picks 27 and 104 for picks 24 and 174, saying, “Call me back. Obviously, (it’s) depending on if our guy’s there.”
However, the Cardinals ended up staying put and selecting Darius Robinson at Pick 27. The video doesn’t clarify why the trade didn’t happen—whether their player was picked or if they were outbid by the Lions. Ultimately, Dallas accepted a better deal from Detroit.
The Lions’ trade details:
– **Lions receive**: Pick 24, 2025 seventh-rounder
– **Cowboys receive**: Pick 29, Pick 73 (third-rounder)
The proposed Cardinals-Cowboys trade details:
– **Cardinals receive**: Pick 24, Pick 174 (late fifth)
– **Cowboys receive**: Pick 27, Pick 104 (early fourth)
Using trade value charts, the Lions’ trade was significantly more valuable for the Cowboys. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean the Lions overpaid if Terrion Arnold proves to be a valuable pick in the coming years.
