BREAKING NEWS: Atlanta Falcons Acquire Key Player from St. Louis Battlehawks
Recently, we discussed how the Atlanta Falcons have largely maintained the same offensive line as last year, particularly for the top seven players, showcasing the group’s strength. However, the team appears to be seeking better depth, especially at the tackle position, evidenced by recent moves.
The latest addition is Jaryd Jones-Smith, formerly of the St. Louis Battlehawks, as reported by NFL insider Aaron Wilson last night. An undrafted free agent from 2018 out of Pittsburgh, Jones-Smith has played in six NFL games, with his last appearance in 2021. He has also spent two seasons in the XFL/UFL with the Battlehawks, earning All-XFL/All-UFL honors.
Jones-Smith is a sizable tackle at 6’7” and 320 pounds, known for his pass protection skills, which generated some interest when he entered the league. This could make him a notable candidate among the hopeful tackles behind Jake Matthews, Kaleb McGary, and Storm Norton, who haven’t consistently excelled in pass protection. Despite the competition, Jones-Smith faces tough odds to make the final roster. However, with the team likely to carry several linemen on the practice squad, there’s potential for a standout tackle to secure a spot, and Jones-Smith has as good a chance as any.
Falcoholic reader and avid UFL/XFL watcher BraveDirtyHawk shared a positive opinion about the signing on X/Twitter. Incidentally, leagues and platforms constantly changing their names can be quite confusing.
This is another instance of the Falcons seeking talent from other leagues. Last August, they brought in four former XFL players for summer competition and previously added offensive lineman Barry Wesley, Lukas Denis, and LaCale London, all of whom are still with the team. Given this trend, it’s reasonable to expect the Falcons to sign more UFL players this summer, with a few likely making the practice squad.
Let’s give Jones-Smith a warm welcome to Atlanta and see how he performs when the Falcons return to the practice field for training camp in late July.
