Florida State emerged as a serious contender for the national championship last season, boasting a record that warranted consideration for the College Football Playoff. Their roster, largely fortified through the transfer portal, featured 10 players selected in the recent NFL Draft, with nine of them starting their careers elsewhere. Among them, five were drafted within the first three rounds, demonstrating their impact.

Head coach Mike Norvell illustrated that a contender can be crafted through strategic use of the transfer market. However, Lincoln Riley’s attempt at USC highlighted the volatility inherent in this approach. While USC landed stars like QB Caleb Williams and WR Jordan Addison, they also faced setbacks with other transfers.

The influence of transfers in college football has grown significantly, especially with the advent of the one-time transfer rule and additional eligibility due to the 2020 season changes. Programs like Ole Miss and Louisville have integrated dozens of transfers seamlessly into their rosters, signaling a new norm in offseason roster management.

The scouting of transfer players remains a developing field. Data is still limited on which teams consistently excel in this area, making it a continual learning process. Positions like wide receiver, edge defender, and cornerback have shown higher success rates in producing NFL talent among transfers, suggesting strategic advantages in targeting these positions.

Looking ahead, Notre Dame has capitalized on the transfer market, securing talent like Kris Mitchell and Beaux Collins. While positions like offensive tackle and tight end have been less fruitful in producing NFL-level talent through transfers, Notre Dame’s historical success at tight end mitigates this concern.

Identifying hidden gems from smaller programs remains a valuable strategy. A notable portion of drafted transfers originated from Group of 5 schools or lower levels, showcasing the potential for significant talent discoveries in these settings.

Ultimately, the evaluation of transfer prospects relies on comprehensive scouting and leveraging relationships with NFL scouts to gauge potential transitions to higher competition levels effectively. This approach ensures that programs like Notre Dame can strategically enhance their rosters for sustained success.
