Bills’ $21 Million Cornerback Prioritizes Family, Skips OTAs

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott praised the team’s strong attendance at organized team activities (OTAs), but the absence of Rasul Douglas stood out as noteworthy. Douglas, the team’s starting cornerback, chose to skip all OTAs, sparking speculation about potential discord within the Bills organization.

However, Douglas did attend mandatory minicamp and openly addressed his absence from OTAs, citing his priority to spend quality time with his son, Jeremiah, and his family.

“I believe as an athlete, you need breaks from the season’s mindset to recharge,” Douglas explained to reporters. “We often miss important family events, so it’s crucial to step back, appreciate our blessings, and enjoy time with loved ones to keep our minds healthy and happy.”

Douglas had previously communicated his offseason approach to Bills coaches and staff, ensuring there were no misunderstandings about his commitment. He views the voluntary offseason period as a chance to rejuvenate mentally and physically, preparing himself fully for the upcoming training camp.

Entering the final season of his three-year, $21 million contract with the Bills, Douglas appeared relaxed about his contract status and potential extension discussions.

“I didn’t even realize this was my contract year,” Douglas admitted during media interactions. “I hope management sees my worth and considers rewarding me, but I’m focused on performing well regardless.”

Since joining the Bills from the Green Bay Packers mid-season due to Tre’Davious White’s injury, Douglas has made a significant impact, recording impressive stats despite his initial unfamiliarity with the team’s defensive scheme. He credits his success to following the guidance of veteran safeties Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde.

Looking ahead to the 2024 season, Douglas has set personal goals, including aiming for Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors. With increased responsibilities on the defense following Poyer’s departure, Douglas looks forward to mentoring younger players like Christian Benford and contributing to the team’s success.

“CB is a great teammate and a hard worker,” Douglas praised Benford. “We’re in touch regularly, discussing both football and family matters, which helps us build a strong bond both on and off the field.”

As Douglas prepares for the upcoming season, his focus remains on contributing positively to the Bills’ defense and achieving personal milestones while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
