Charles Woodson’s Michigan Title Celebration and Thoughts on Will Johnson’s No. 2 Legacy

Like many devoted Michigan football fans, Charles Woodson couldn’t contain his joy when the Wolverines clinched the 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship. Despite not being present at NRG Stadium in Houston that January night due to a prior commitment, the U-M legend and NFL great made sure to celebrate his alma mater’s first title in 26 years in style.

Woodson recounted to TMI’s Alejandro Zúñiga how he stood up among his group and announced, “Hey, my team just won the national championship, and I must sing the fight song.” With a smile, he shared, “I took great pride in that moment.”

Back in 1997, Woodson was college football’s standout player, leading Michigan to their last national championship before embarking on a storied career in the NFL. Despite his achievements, Woodson has maintained close ties with Ann Arbor, returning frequently for charitable events like Event on Main and Golf on Main, which support the Charles Woodson Clinical Research Fund at University of Michigan Health C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital.

This year’s fundraiser was particularly special as it coincided with Michigan’s championship win, marking a unique celebration for Woodson and the community he cherishes. Looking ahead, Woodson expressed optimism about the program’s future under coach Sherrone Moore, emphasizing the team’s maturation and continued pursuit of excellence.

Reflecting on current Wolverines standout Will Johnson, who wears the iconic No. 2 jersey as a personal challenge, Woodson expressed admiration: “I’m proud of how he’s developed as a player and established himself as one of the best corners in college football.” Woodson noted the weight that comes with wearing No. 2 at Michigan and praised Johnson’s professionalism and competitive spirit.

As Michigan prepares for the upcoming season, Woodson remains optimistic about their prospects under Moore’s leadership, echoing the sentiment that one championship is just the beginning of their journey towards sustained success.
