Ravens Star Player Surprised by Contract Extension ‘I Never Expected

Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Rashod Bateman continues to express surprise over receiving a contract extension this offseason. The Ravens finalized a two-year, $12.8 million deal with Bateman, as reported by Spotrac. During OTAs, Bateman acknowledged that the extension “came out of nowhere.” Speaking on the Ravens’ “The Lounge” podcast, Bateman reiterated his astonishment, confessing he hadn’t anticipated it.

“I got an extension,” Bateman shared enthusiastically. “Which no one expected — including myself!”

Selected in the first round of the 2021 draft, Bateman has faced challenges in his three years with the Ravens, plagued by injuries and personal setbacks off the field. Despite playing all 16 games last season, a foot injury during training camp hindered his start. Reflecting on “The Lounge,” Bateman disclosed the impact of personal losses and setbacks on his mental state.

Bateman’s on-field production has been inconsistent, surpassing 500 receiving yards only in his rookie season and totaling just four touchdowns in his career. He recounted being in Texas bowling when his agent called about the Ravens’ interest in extending his contract, an opportunity he hadn’t anticipated, having considered the possibility of being traded.

“I never felt like I earned [the extension],” Bateman admitted. “But I reminded myself that hard work and dedication do count.”

Despite doubts, Bateman views the extension as a vote of confidence from the Ravens. Heading into the upcoming season, he represents a pivotal element for the team’s receiving corps. The Ravens, who focused on draft picks rather than signing free-agent receivers, look to Bateman to bolster their passing game.

Reports from minicamp indicated mixed performances from Bateman, initially showing frustration but bouncing back with improved displays. The Ravens’ decision to extend Bateman’s contract underscores their belief in his potential, yet his upcoming season will determine the move’s success in bolstering the team’s offensive capabilities.
