Detroit Lions Star Encounters Health Concern
Detroit Lions icon Barry Sanders disclosed on Friday evening that he recently experienced a medical incident over Father’s Day weekend.
“I had a health scare related to my heart,” Sanders stated in a message shared on Twitter. “It was unexpected and served as a reminder of the importance of staying vigilant about our physical well-being, even when we are feeling fine.
“I am thankful to the incredible doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals who provided me with necessary care. My family and I deeply appreciate your prayers and support during this time.
“Following my doctors’ advice, I am taking this opportunity to prioritize my health and well-being. I thank you for your understanding and continued support.”
No further details were provided regarding Sanders’ current health status.
The former Lions running back enjoyed a decade-long career with the team from 1989 to 1998, having been drafted third overall in the 1989 NFL Draft. He was subsequently inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004 following a storied tenure in Detroit. Sanders has remained involved with the Lions as an official team ambassador through their alumni program. Last year, the Lions honored his legacy by unveiling a statue outside Ford Field commemorating his illustrious career.
“It has been an incredible journey for me, supported and cheered on by Lions fans and Barry Sanders enthusiasts,” Sanders expressed in September. “Your support means the world to me.”
Updates on Sanders’ health will be shared as they become available.
