Michigan State’s Revamped Duo Ready to Shock Spectators with Impressive Big Ten Rushing Attack in 2024

Nate Carter

Michigan State football‘s head coach, Jonathan Smith, took significant steps this offseason to rejuvenate the Spartans’ backfield. Following a disappointing 2023 season marred by offensive line struggles, Smith knew changes were necessary. With Jalen Berger underperforming and Nate Carter hampered by poor line play, a backfield overhaul was inevitable.

Berger and Jaren Mangham both entered the transfer portal, leaving Smith with the task of finding fresh talent to support Carter. Smith’s search led him to target several transfer running backs, ultimately securing UMass standout Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams, who had an impressive 1,000-yard season in 2023. Lynch-Adams’ breakout performance with the Minutemen made him a prime candidate to bolster Michigan State’s revamped backfield.

Despite Carter’s 798 rushing yards last season, he often struggled behind a faltering offensive line. However, he occasionally flashed his potential, hinting at what could be achieved with better support up front.

Looking ahead to the 2024 season, the Spartans’ offensive line appears significantly improved, setting the stage for a more productive running game. The backfield duo of Carter and Lynch-Adams, who collectively amassed over 1,800 rushing yards last year, is poised to surprise many skeptics. This tandem is currently flying under the radar, but by late September or October, they could establish one of the most improved rushing attacks in the Big Ten.

Given last year’s dismal ground game, it’s hard to imagine a worse scenario for the Spartans. However, with the improvements made, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Michigan State produce a 1,000-yard rusher this season—likely Carter—alongside another back gaining 500-600 yards. This anticipated turnaround could redefine expectations for the Spartans’ offense in 2024, making them a formidable force in the conference.
