Indianapolis Colts All-Pro Linebacker Succumbs to Injuries, Mourned by Team
Shaquille Leonard’s journey through the 2022 and 2023 NFL seasons has been one marked by challenges and resilience.
After undergoing back surgery in June 2022, Shaquille Leonard faced a rocky start with the Indianapolis Colts. He missed the first three games of the season to recover, only to return in Week 4 and endure a concussion and broken nose, sidelining him for Weeks 5-7.
Despite these setbacks, Leonard made a comeback in Week 8, but his struggles with back issues resurfaced by Week 10, leading to his placement on injured reserve in mid-November. This decision ultimately ended his 2022 campaign prematurely, concluding with modest statistics of 11 tackles, one interception, one pass deflection, and a commendable effort considering his injury challenges.
The linebacker’s resilience shone through in 2023 as he recovered and started the season strong with the Colts, tallying 65 tackles, two tackles for loss (TFLs), and earning a respectable 60.3 PFF grade in his first nine games. However, as younger players like Zaire Franklin and E.J. Speed emerged, Leonard’s role diminished, leading to his release by the Colts before Week 12.
Finding a new opportunity with the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 13 of the 2023 season, Leonard made an impact with 23 tackles, two TFLs, and a sack over five games, starting three.
Despite missing the Wild Card game due to inactivity, Leonard’s performance underscored his perseverance and contribution to his new team’s defensive efforts.
