Setting the Bar: What Expectations Await Anthony Richardson in the Upcoming Season?

Anthony Richardson, a rookie with limited college experience, appeared in just four games last season for the Indianapolis Colts, completing only two of them. The Colts suffered losses in both games, falling to the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Los Angeles Rams in overtime.

Expectations were understandably modest for Richardson, the fourth overall pick in the 2023 draft, given his scant college background, which left uncertainties about his NFL quarterbacking abilities. These uncertainties extend into his “sophomore season,” where he logged only 173 snaps.

Last season, Richardson’s stats included completing 50 out of 84 passes (59.5%) for 577 yards with 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. He also rushed 25 times for 136 yards and scored 4 rushing touchdowns.

In a recent discussion on Query & Company, hosted by Jimmy Cook and James Boyd, expectations for Richardson were debated. Cook suggested a target of 14 or 15 games played as a measure of success for the former Florida Gator. Boyd highlighted accuracy as another critical factor, noting Richardson’s completion rates across different seasons.

CBS4 & FOX59’s Mike Chappell expressed curiosity about Richardson’s potential as a passer, particularly his ability to achieve a higher completion percentage. Despite recent hype, particularly in fantasy football circles and in betting odds for season awards, there remains uncertainty about Richardson’s future performance.
