Bengals Star Defender Praised by AFC Rival in Crucial 2024 Offseason
The Cincinnati Bengals have excelled in recent seasons at assembling a talented roster aimed at contending for another AFC title. While a strong roster is crucial for NFL competitiveness, star power is also essential in this league.
The Bengals have invested significantly in acquiring offensive stars like quarterback Burrow Joe, wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, and wide receiver Tee Higgins. Despite this focus on offensive talent, the team has also managed to maintain a group of skilled defenders.
Cincinnati Bengals Defensive End Receives Praise from AFC East Star
On defense, the Bengals have assembled a solid group of contributors, but defensive end Trey Hendrickson stands out as their most valuable star. Since joining from the New Orleans Saints in 2021, Hendrickson has become one of the top pass rushers in the league, highlighted by a 17.5-sack season in 2024, which ranked second in the NFL.
Despite his impressive statistics, Hendrickson is often considered one of the most underrated defenders in the league. Recently, Buffalo Bills offensive tackle Dion Dawkins gave Hendrickson significant recognition during an appearance on Colin Cowherd’s show, *The Herd*.

Dawkins, known for his own elite play, praised Hendrickson’s mental and physical prowess, noting, “He is one of the best players, just mentally, physically, and what he does on the football field. He plays without gloves.”
Hendrickson’s choice to play without gloves is linked to his exceptional hand technique. While he may not have the elite athleticism of some top pass rushers, his hand skills make him incredibly challenging for offensive tackles to block effectively.
“That’s one of those subtle signs you notice when you first see a player on the field. You check his helmet and shoes, and then you see he’s not wearing gloves. For a player who relies on his hands all game, that indicates he’s a serious football player. He comes at you relentlessly on every play, making it clear that you have to be sharp and focused at all times.”
Despite being overlooked by many in the NFL, Hendrickson continues to produce impressive pass rush statistics. Expect him to have another standout season as he heads into 2024.
