Jason Wright

Jason Wright will conclude his tenure with the Commanders after the 2024 season. On Thursday, Wright and team owner Josh Harris announced that Wright would depart by the season’s end.

As reported by Nicki Jhabvala and Mark Maske of the Washington Post, Wright will immediately step down from his president role, transitioning to senior advisor while continuing his previous duties. Harris and Tad Brown will oversee the search for Wright’s successor.

The Post highlighted that Wright’s contract, which began in 2020, was set to expire in August, making his departure anticipated. If he exits before the season ends, the Commanders will facilitate his transition to new opportunities. Wright, 42, was a finalist to replace Mark Murphy as Packers president next year, hinting at his departure.

“This feels like the right moment for me to explore my next leadership opportunity,” Wright stated. “I’m extremely grateful to my Commanders colleagues, our fans, and this community for all that we have accomplished these past four years, and I look forward to a successful season for the Burgundy and Gold.”

Wright’s departure marks another significant change in the front office following Harris’ 2023 acquisition of the Commanders. Harris’ first season involved a comprehensive evaluation of the organization, leading to recent major changes. This included hiring Dan Quinn as Ron Rivera’s replacement and Adam Peters as general manager, while Martin Mayhew remains in the organization. Additionally, former Panthers GM Scott Fitterer joined Washington’s front office this week.

“Jason has made a remarkable impact on the Commanders organization since he joined four years ago,” Harris said. “He stepped in during a challenging time and led an incredible transformation, setting the stage for the future. I am extremely grateful to Jason for his partnership over the past year. His guidance and leadership have reshaped our culture.”

Wright was hired during a turbulent period for the organization, which faced allegations of workplace misconduct and a toxic culture under former owner Dan Snyder. Since then, the franchise has seen significant improvements, and Wright aims to leverage this progress to secure a high-ranking executive role with a new team.
