The Jacksonville Jaguars have secured a key piece of their defense by signing cornerback Tyson Campbell to a four-year, $76.5 million contract extension, with $53.4 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Campbell, now “the highest-paid CB in NFL history that had yet to be named to a Pro Bowl,” joins the ranks of elite players at his position.

The extension places Campbell as the seventh-highest-paid cornerback in the NFL in terms of annual salary, at $19.125 million per year, per Over The Cap. Only Jaire Alexander, Denzel Ward, Jalen Ramsey, Marlon Humphrey, Marshon Lattimore, and Trevon Diggs earn more annually.
Drafted with the 33rd overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Campbell was part of a standout class for the Jaguars that included Trevor Lawrence, Travis Etienne, Walker Little, and Andre Cisco. This class is on track to be one of the best in the franchise’s history, with Campbell becoming the second member to secure a second contract, following Lawrence’s five-year extension in June.

Campbell has played in 45 career games over three seasons, starting 44 straight games before injuries sidelined him for eight games in 2021 and 2023. Despite missing time, his impact on the field has been significant. Campbell’s defensive stats include six interceptions, 30 pass deflections, and two forced fumbles.

While Campbell has yet to gain national recognition, his performance has been consistently strong. His lack of Pro Bowl appearances and lower rankings by Pro Football Network and PFF are offset by his impressive stats, such as leading the league in yards allowed per coverage snap (0.4) in zone coverage in 2022 and ranking first in Sports Info Solutions’ WAR metric for cornerbacks.

Campbell’s ability to disrupt plays, particularly in zone coverage, and his role as the Jaguars’ primary cornerback tasked with covering the toughest matchups, highlight his importance to the team. Defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen and assistant cornerbacks coach Cory Robinson have praised Campbell’s athleticism, intelligence, and focus, predicting a bright future for the young cornerback.

The Jaguars are banking on Campbell and their 2021 draft class to elevate the team’s performance. With Campbell’s extension, they have solidified their belief in his potential to be a game-changer and a cornerstone of their defense. As the team looks ahead, Campbell’s development and impact on the field will be crucial to their success.
