Giants’ Mike Kafka Reveals Surprising New Role After Losing Play-Calling Responsibilities
After interviewing for several head coaching positions and considering a potential move away from East Rutherford, Mike Kafka was ultimately retained by the New York Giants. Despite receiving the title of assistant head coach, which seemed more symbolic than functional, Kafka was also relieved of his play-calling responsibilities.
This offseason, and throughout training camp, head coach Brian Daboll has not only taken over play-calling but also managed the offensive meetings. Kafka’s current role, as he explained after practice on Thursday, involves assisting Daboll with offensive strategies, discussing the scheme, and managing practice flow, including drills and organization. Kafka serves as a communication link between the coaching staff and Daboll, ensuring that Daboll’s vision is implemented effectively.
Though Kafka maintains a positive outlook and focuses on learning and contributing wherever he can, it’s clear that his role has been significantly diminished despite the apparent promotion. He continues to study and analyze both the Giants’ and other teams’ strategies to support the team’s success.
Kafka did not disclose his specific role for the upcoming game against the Detroit Lions but indicated that Daboll will handle play-calling, with Kafka likely assisting from the booth by relaying observations to the field. The details of his gameday role remain to be clarified.
