Giants part ways with Injured RB after Claiming Commander CB off waivers

Christian Holmes #34 of the Washington Commanders

The New York Giants have made another roster move as they continue to refine their lineup ahead of the 2024 season. On August 5, the team waived running back Jashaun Corbin with an injury waiver, a decision that follows the recent trend of releasing injured bubble candidates.

According to KPRC2 NFL insider Aaron Wilson, the Giants have decided to part ways with Corbin, who had been struggling with injuries. Corbin initially joined the Giants as an undrafted rookie in 2022. After spending his first season on the practice squad, he signed with the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad in 2023. The Giants later reclaimed him, promoting Corbin to the active roster in October. During his tenure, he appeared in six regular-season games, contributing 13 scrimmage yards on 15 offensive snaps and making his most significant impact on special teams, logging 118 snaps.

If Corbin clears waivers, he will have the option to seek an injury settlement or remain with the Giants on season-ending injured reserve.

In a separate transaction, the Giants have been awarded cornerback Christian Holmes off waivers from the Washington Commanders. Holmes, a seventh-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, brings experience and potential depth to the Giants’ secondary. Over his two NFL seasons, Holmes has appeared in 30 games, with two starts in his rookie year. He has accumulated 20 total tackles, two fumble recoveries, and one pass defense.

Holmes’ rookie season was challenging, with Pro Football Focus highlighting his struggles in coverage, including an 85.7% reception rate and a 156.3 passer rating allowed. His tackling also suffered, reflected in a high missed tackle rate of 27.3%. However, in 2023, Holmes showed improvement, reducing his reception rate to 66.7% and his passer rating to 96.5. He also improved his tackling, not missing any tackles during the season.

With Holmes joining the Giants, it’s likely he will compete for a role on the roster, potentially as a core special teamer, given his extensive special teams experience—607 snaps over his two seasons compared to just 136 defensive snaps.

As the Giants continue to make strategic moves to solidify their roster, these changes highlight the team’s ongoing efforts to address depth and performance concerns as they prepare for the upcoming NFL season.
