The Kansas City Chiefs returned to training camp with renewed energy after a brief respite, holding a non-padded practice on Monday that brought a mixture of good and concerning news regarding player injuries. After a demanding preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday, the Chiefs’ practice session provided both hope and caution as the team navigates through camp.

Positive Returns
One of the most encouraging developments was the return of safety Justin Reid to the field. Justin Reid, who had been sidelined with a quad injury and placed on the non-football injury (NFI) list, was spotted at practice with his helmet on. His presence suggests that he has cleared the NFI list and is moving closer to a full return. Reid’s return could be a significant boost to the Chiefs’ secondary, which has been dealing with several injury concerns.
Similarly, linebacker Nick Bolton made his comeback to practice, albeit with a noticeable heavy elbow brace. Bolton’s return marks his first appearance on the field since suffering an elbow injury on July 31. His presence should bolster the Chiefs’ linebacker corps as they prepare for the regular season.
Wide receiver Kadarius Toney also returned to practice after a stint on the sidelines. Toney’s return, however, is his second attempt to rejoin the team since his injury on July 31. His participation is crucial for the Chiefs’ receiving corps, especially with the need for consistent playmakers alongside star receiver Tyreek Hill.
Injury Concerns
Despite the positive updates, Monday’s practice was not without its share of concerns. Defensive tackle Chris Jones was notably absent from practice due to a shoulder issue. Offensive tackle Wanya Morris (knee) and wide receiver Jaaron Hayek (hamstring) were also present but did not participate in the session.

Additionally, safety Bryan Cook, running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, offensive lineman McKade Mettauer, and wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown were missing from practice. The absence of Brown is particularly worrisome given that he suffered a sternoclavicular post dislocation during Saturday’s preseason opener. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid confirmed after the game that Brown was taken to the hospital for evaluation. The team is still awaiting updates on his condition.
The absence of Cook, who missed his first practice of camp, adds another layer of concern. The nature of his injury remains unclear, leaving fans and analysts speculating about his status.
Other Sidelined Players
Defensive ends Charles Omenihu and B.J. Thompson remain on the physically unable to perform (PUP) and non-football injury (NFI) lists, respectively. Their continued absence leaves a gap in the defensive line, which the Chiefs will need to address as they move closer to the regular season.

Overall, Monday’s practice provided a snapshot of the Chiefs’ current injury situation. While the return of key players like Reid and Bolton offers a glimmer of optimism, the list of sidelined individuals, particularly concerning injuries to Brown and Cook, highlights the ongoing challenges the team faces. As the preseason progresses, the Chiefs will need to carefully manage these injuries and ensure their key players are ready for the regular season’s demands.
